Yvonne Mouser Water-Safety Instructor in Oviedo, Florida

Welcome!  My name is Yvonne Mouser, and I have been a Certified ISR Instructor for 21 years now and I absolutely love what I do!  I was born and raised in the former Panama Canal Zone in the Republic of Panama.  I moved to the states to attend College in Ada, Oklahoma where I received my B.S. Degree in Cartography.  After earning my degree I moved to Oviedo, FL and worked in the mapping field for 10 years.  After my oldest daughter was born I looked into ISR, but didn't have the time to enroll her in lessons due to my work schedule and long commute to Lake County, FL.  

    One day she was walking along our pool steps and fell in right next to my husband.  We had been discussing ISR lessons for our daughter and it was this event that convinced us to enroll her with ISR.  So, that summer after my second daughter was born I enrolled my older daughter right away with ISR.  As I took both my two year old and new born baby along to lessons everyday I was amazed how she progressed in her skills day by day with her instructor.  This is when I started to realize the extreme differences between ISR's Self-Rescue™ lessons and American Red Cross swim lessons for this age.  I look back now and think how uninformed I was as a new mom and even with my past certification as a Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor with the American Red Cross.

    It is because of my daughters, I decided to change my career path to become a Certified Instructor with ISR and to help promote community awareness.  I realized that I could not only be home with my children to see them grow up, but still have a career that I saw a passion for and could make a difference in other families lives.  So, I left my full time career as a GIS Manager with Lake County, FL and trained to become an Instructor with ISR.  While training with ISR, I was able to enroll my 10-month-old baby, as a Floater in the program.  Having both of my girls skilled in ISR's Self-Rescue lessons and now being trained as a Certified Instructor it became my mission to see the day that "Not One More Child Drowns".

Can’t babies swim naturally?
Unfortunately, babies cannot naturally swim. If this were the case, there wouldn’t be so many drownings every year. According to the Center for Disease Control and Accident Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-4 in the United States.
Can you really teach a child who is not verbal how to swim?
Yes. Consider that children learn to sit, crawl and walk before they learn to speak. Because we teach through sensori-motor learning, verbal skills are not required for a child to acquire Self-Rescue skills. We are able to communicate with our students through touch and positive reinforcement while striving to set our students up for success every step of the way.
If more frequent but shorter lessons are better, then why don’t you teach 7 days/week?
Everyone needs a little break from learning to process the information and in this case to give muscles a chance to recover. In addition, you need to be able to spend time with your family, as does your instructor. Weekends are family time. Periodically, if weather or other issues have cause lessons to be canceled for numerous days, your instructor may choose to offer make-up lessons on a weekend. This is strictly up to the instructor and based on the availability of parents.
What is the American Academy of Pediatrics position on swimming lessons for young children?
The AAP encourages parents to consider that starting water-survival skills training at an early age must be individualized, based on the child's frequency of exposure to water, emotional maturity, physical limitations and health concerns related to swimming pools.
